MINNEAPOLIS — Niko Medved is getting the hang of coaching at The Barn.

He still hasn’t lost in the place where he watched games as a kid.

Medved’s injury-depleted Gophers men’s basketball squad scrapped and clawed and dug extra deep to pull off another Big Ten upset.

Down two starters to season-ending injuries, the Gophers watched their double-digit lead evaporate down the stretch and then held their breath as the 19th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes missed three consecutive 3-pointers on the final possession that would have forced overtime.

Finally able to exhale, the Gophers celebrated a 70-67 win at Williams Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 6 before an announced crowd of 8,976.

The Gophers (10-5) remained undefeated at The Barn, improved to 3-1 in the Big Ten and notched their second win over a ranked opponent after beating No. 22 Indiana on Dec. 3.

They also extended their winning streak to five games and secured their first home win over the Hawkeyes since Christmas night in 2020.

Langston Reynolds led the Gophers with 22 points. Cade Tyson added 16.

The Gophers were outrebounded 39-28 but outshot Iowa 47% to 40%.

Bennett Stirtz led the Hawkeyes (12-3, 2-2) with 21 points.

The Gophers play host to USC at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 at Williams Arena.
