ORLANDO, Fla. — On a night where Magic forwards Franz Wagner (37 points) and Paolo Banchero (31) notched 30-plus points in the same game, Orlando faltered late against the Atlanta Hawks at Kia Center on Monday.

Hawks All-Star guard Trae Young had just eight points through three quarters, but ended with 19 after he posted 11 in the fourth quarter to lead Atlanta to the 112-106 road victory.

In a balanced effort by the Hawks, five Atlanta scorers finished in double figures and five others ended with at least eight.

And as Banchero and Wagner combined for 68, no other Magic scorer finished above nine points.

It’s a significant result because the No. 9 Hawks (26-28) entered the contest just half-a-game back of the No. 8 Magic in the East.

Monday’s game was also the first of four between the Southeast Division foes with fewer than 30 games remaining in the regular season.

Orlando (26-29) will wrap up a three-game homestand Wednesday against Charlotte before the week-long league All-Star break.

What worked

Whether it was Wagner driving to the basket while relying on his fancy footwork or rookie Tristan da Silva and second-year guard Anthony Black cutting to the basket, the Magic made an effort early to establish driving lines for points in the paint.

Orlando trailed 44-37 with 5:22 left in the first half but led 57-50 at the break thanks to an 11-point second quarter by Wagner.

The Magic totaled 46 points in the paint on the night. That all led to Orlando getting to the foul line where they shot 20 of 24.

Orlando, which entered shooting a league-low 30.4% from 3, also shot 12 of 30 (40%) from beyond the arc.

What didn’t

The Magic failed to take care of the basketball when they turned the ball over 18 times for 20 Atlanta points.

The Hawks entered the contest averaging 16.5 opponents’ turnovers — the fourth most in the NBA and only two spots behind Orlando, which forces 16.7.

Although the Magic turned the ball a lot, they were able to make up for it when they scored 20 points off 17 Atlanta turnovers.

Banchero’s big 3rd quarter

Following a nine-point first half, Banchero posted 20 points in the third quarter, which marked a Magic season-high for a third quarter.

He did this by shooting 4 of 6 from beyond the arc on a night when Orlando shot 40% from 3 as a group.

The All-Star forward was also efficient at the charity stripe, where he shot 7 of 8 in 33 minutes.

Monday’s contest was fifth time this season Banchero and Wagner notched 20-plus points in the same game.

Rookie watch

Facing No. 1 pick and Hawks rookie Zaccharie Risacher for the first time, da Silva totaled nine points off the bench in 16 minutes.

He didn’t miss a free throw (4 of 4), cut to the basket with intent and drilled his lone 3 early in the second quarter.

For Atlanta, Risacher posted 11 points with four assists and two rebounds in 18 minutes during his first trip to Orlando.
