DENVER — The homer-hitting man-child helped prolong the Mariners’ elimination from the postseason for a little longer.

Given the homers he’s hit in his three-week long MLB career, the possibility of Lázaro Montes connecting with a baseball in the thin air of Coors Field made each at-bat delicious with anticipation.

The rookie slugger delivered in the eighth inning Friday night.

Montes’ solo homer into the upper deck in right field off Jordan Romano proved to be the difference in the Mariners’ 5-4 win over the Rockies.

Montes’ fourth homer of the season rescued the Mariners from a potential defeat to the team with the worst record in baseball.

Andrés Muñoz closed out the game for his 28th save of the season. It wasn’t easy. He allowed a leadoff single to Cole Carigg, who promptly stole second base. But the Mariners took advantage of Carigg’s aggression, picking him off for the second out of the inning.

Muñoz struck out Mickey Moniak to end the game.

Bryan Woo gave the Mariners a solid start but didn’t figure into the decision.

Woo started the sixth with a 3-2 lead, despite getting minimal help from his defense in the first five innings.

He retired the first batter he faced and allowed a single to No. 9 hitter Ezequiel Tovar. With the top of the lineup coming up for the fourth time against him, Mariners manager Dan Wilson decided to make a change.

He brought in lefty Gabe Speier to face left-handed-hitting Jake McCarthy. But the left-on-left matchup meant little to McCarthy, who came into the game with a .320/.374/.520 slash line in 164 plate appearances against lefties this season. He added to those numbers, lashing a triple to the gap in left-center to tie the score.

Connor Norby immediately followed with a single to center to score McCarthy and give the Rockies a 4-3 lead.

The Mariners answered in the top of the seventh. Michael Arroyo led off with a pinch-hit double to left off lefty Brennan Bernardino. J.P. Crawford bunted Arroyo to third, and Dom Canzone drove him in with a sac fly to center to tie the score at 4-4.
