SEATTLE — In the best start of his career, Bryan Woo allowed only one hit over eight dominant innings, helping the Mariners avoid an embarrassing four-game sweep to the Athletics with a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon.

With a runner on first, Woo got Brian Serven to pop out to end the eighth inning, his 102nd and final pitch, and walked off the field to a standing ovation from the crowd of 36,867 at T-Mobile Park.

Woo allowed just three base runners and struck out nine.

“It means a lot,” Woo said of the standing ovation. “All the frustration and stuff that fans feel, like, we feel it tenfold. Good games, bad games, whatever — we sit with it just as much. So it means a lot for them to stick with us, and we can’t do what we want to do without them.”

Henry Bolte’s fourth-inning single served as the Athletics’ only hit, and ex-Mariner Donovan Walton drew two walks off Woo.

Woo’s previous career high was 7 1/3 innings in July 2025 at Yankee Stadium.

Andrés Muñoz closed it out in the ninth.

The Athletics (57-87) won the first three games of the series to leave the Mariners’ playoff hopes on the brink of extinction. The Mariners held a team meeting late Saturday after a 6-2 defeat that ranks as one of their worst performances of the season.

“There’s not really much to say,” Cal Raleigh said postgame Sunday. “It’s, put your best foot forward, play as hard as you can, try to win as many games you can for the rest of the season and whatever happens, happens. We’re at that point and put ourselves in a bad position. … It’s just go out there and find a way to get it done.”

The Mariners (67-77) opened the fourth inning with five straight singles, and Raleigh drove in the first run in the fourth inning with a two-strike single to left field to bring in Dom Canzone from second base. It was Raleigh’s sixth hit in his previous nine at-bats in the series.

J.P. Crawford followed with a sharp single up the middle to drive in Julio Rodríguez and make it 2-0.

Gage Jump, the A’s rookie left-hander, then struck out Weston Wilson, Michael Arroyo and Jhonny Pereda to strand the bases loaded.

Arroyo, one of the Mariners’ top prospects, went 0 for 3 in his MLB debut.

Raleigh just missed a home run in the first inning on a ball that sailed just foul at the left-field pole. According to MLB.com, a strong wind pushed the ball 12 feet into foul territory.
