Mariners beat Astros to take series in Houston

HOUSTON — With a mixture of elation and irritation, Bryan Woo let out a primal scream and smacked the side of his glove with his right hand as Cal Raleigh made a catch of a Jose Altuve pop-up in foul territory to close out a crucial sixth inning.
In the Seattle Mariners’ most important game of the season, Woo had done his part Sunday night, limiting the Houston Astros to three hits and two runs over six strong innings, and two innings later Seranthony Domínguez came out of the bullpen and came through in his biggest moment with his new club, lifting the Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the Astros and a series win over their AL West-leading rivals.
Domínguez struck out Daulton Varsho swinging over a splitter to strand the bases loaded in the eighth inning, preserving the Mariners’ one-run lead.
Two days after surrendering a Christian Walker walk-off homer in a devastating loss, Andrés Muñoz closed out the win Sunday, touching 102 mph in the ninth inning. He got Walker to ground out to start the inning and then struck out pinch-hitter Taylor Trammell, the former Mariner, on three pitches to end it.
The Mariners (59-66) pulled within four games of the Astros (63-62) in the division.
The M’s are 9-2 against the Astros this season, with a short two-game series still to play between the two rivals in September in Seattle.
Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh each homered into the short-porch Crawford Boxes, and Dom Canzone had a key two-out RBI single off Houston ace Hunter Brown.
