Pirates-Yankees rained out Tuesday, scheduled to play doubleheader Wednesday

NEW YORK — The Pirates’ game scheduled for Tuesday night against the New York Yankees was postponed due to rain, the teams announced Tuesday afternoon.

They will now play a doubleheader on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, with games scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m.

Forecasts called for rain and thunderstorms lasting late into the night, with no real window to play a game. As many as five inches of rain were expected in some areas. In addition, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch until 9 p.m. in New York City and the surrounding counties.

It’ll be the third consecutive series in which the Pirates have played a doubleheader. They won both games last Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers after Friday’s game was rained out, then split a doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday when it was too smoky to play Friday.

The Yankees also just came off a weekend doubleheader, splitting two games with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Right-hander Bubba Chandler (3-8, 4.77 ERA) was scheduled to face Yankees right-hander Will Warren (7-4, 4.03) on Tuesday, with Mitch Keller (6-7, 5.14) slotted against right-hander Gerrit Cole (3-5, 3.93) on Wednesday.

Both the Pirates and Yankees are off on Thursday. Evidently, both preferred to play two on Wednesday to protect the off day. After Thursday, the Pirates will play 17 games in 17 days through the trade deadline.

The Yankees announced tickets for Tuesday’s game will be honored for Wednesday night’s game, the second of the doubleheader. Tickets for Wednesday’s game, previously scheduled for 1:35 p.m., will now be valid for the first game, now a half-hour earlier.

The Pirates entered Tuesday tied for the final wild-card spot with the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins. All three teams lost Monday night, as the Pirates dropped an 8-5 decision to the Yankees in the series opener.
