Red Sox place ace Garrett Crochet on injured list

BOSTON — The Red Sox pitching staff has just suffered a massive blow.
The club announced Wednesday that left-hander Garrett Crochet is going on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to April 26 and infielder/outfielder Nate Eaton is being called up from Triple-A Worcester to fill his spot on the active roster.
Though he’s gotten off to an uncharacteristically poor start, Crochet is Boston’s top pitcher and is coming off a strong outing after back-to-back poor showings. The 26-year-old left-hander tossed six scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and seven strikeouts in Saturday’s 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles, which lowered his ERA on the season to 6.30 after allowing 15 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings over his prior two outings.
Overall Crochet has made six starts, posting the aforementioned 6.30 ERA with 37 strikeouts through 30 innings. Last year Crochet finished as runner-up in the AL Cy Young Award race, posting a 2.59 ERA with 255 strikeouts over 205 1/3 innings in his first season with the Red Sox.
Crochet becomes the latest blow for a pitching staff that has already been decimated by injuries. Veteran right-hander Sonny Gray was recently placed on the 15-day IL with a right hamstring strain, and others currently sidelined include starters Johan Oviedo, Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval and Tanner Houck, as well as high-leverage bullpen arm Justin Slaten.
