7 Factors to Consider When Choosing Landscaping Services

Published in Home Articles

According to the National Association of Landscape Professionals, there are about 604,163 landscaping businesses in the industry.

Thanks to all of the different options, it can be difficult when it comes to choosing landscaping services. So how do you make sure that you choose the perfect one for your project?

Keep reading to find out everything you need to know when it comes to all of the options for landscapers.

1. Customer Service

The first thing that you want to find out is how good of customer service they offer. You should also find out if they offer any follow-ups.

Find a contractor who will answer all of your questions, listen to your suggestions, and respond to any of your requests in an appropriate timeframe. If they can’t even do that before the project begins, you won’t have a lot of luck either after you sign the contract.

To make sure they offer good customer service and are trustworthy, make sure you read online customer reviews and ask them for any references. You should also ask if they have any pictures of before and after.

2. Scheduling

You should also ask the potential contractor what their schedule looks like. Some people will tell you what you want to hear in order to get you to sign a contract, but once you sign it, they may have a different timeline.

You should ask them if they are willing to put that timeline into writing. If they’re uncomfortable doing it, they may be trying to scam you. While something in writing that isn’t a contract may not be legally binding, it’s more difficult to argue with it later on.

When you sign your contract, you should look for a section that talks about the scheduling and timeline of the work. If there’s nothing in there, the contractor will likely be able to make up whatever timeline they want and prolong finishing your landscaping project.

3. Cost

You shouldn’t just sign with the first landscaping contractor that you find. Instead, you should start comparing contractor costs to find one that is affordable and fits perfectly in your budget.

Normally, good landscaping contracts will have a better track record with the cost than ones who are new to the game. However, they shouldn’t try and get you to sign up for more than you’re willing to pay for.

Some landscaping companies will also try to take advantage of you if you don’t know very much about landscaping. That’s why it’s important to shop around and ask for quotes so that you know if you’re actually getting a good deal or not.

4. Experience

If you get a landscaping company that doesn’t have a lot of experience, they may be cheaper, but you may not have as good of a job. However, also keep in mind that every company has to start somewhere.

You should be able to go to their website and find a portfolio of different jobs or projects they’ve done in the past. If you find a new company that you like, make sure that they at least do a good job and have a little bit of experience to convince you to take a chance on them.

However, if you go with a company that has been around for a while, you’ll know that you can trust them.

5. Insurance

If a landscaping company tries to tell you that they don’t need insurance to operate, you should stop talking with them and look elsewhere. In most states, you need certain licenses to operate as a business.

However, some companies clearly have higher standards than others. At the very least, they should have a Workers Compensation Board, Liability Insurance, and other insurances to protect their workers, themselves, or even you if something goes wrong while you’re on the job.

For example, if you hire a contractor that doesn’t have Workers Compensation Board coverage and they get injured on your property, then you’re liable for any money. This includes any lost wages because they’d be deemed as your employees since you hired them.

To avoid that, always check to make sure that the companies you’re hiring are licensed. If you can’t find the information, you can always ask them and ask for proof.

6. Variety of Service

While you might need a simple job done, you should find a company that offers all kinds of services. This shows that not only do they have experience with landscaping but also if some issue comes up they’ll know how to handle it.

Plus, when they offer more services, it’s more likely that they are a legit company and know what they’re doing.

7. Equipment

Depending on what type of job you need to be completed, you should make sure that the company has the equipment needed to complete the job. If they don’t, are they going to charge you more to get the equipment that they need?

You should at least find a landscaper that has a vehicle, safety equipment, a utility trailer, and the basics to do your landscaping job.
