Casual clothing items you should keep in your wardrobe
Building a wardrobe is all about versatility so you have plenty of options for all of the facets that make up your daily life. There has to be a balance between your workwear and non-workwear because, let's face it, we (hopefully) don't spend every single day at work. These four wardrobe staples will ensure that you can dress in a casual way without appearing frumpy or disheveled.
1. Your perfect pair of jeans
Finding your perfect pair of jeans can take a lot of testing and try-ons to figure out what style and cut works best for your body. I'm a huge fan of high-waisted jeans, and I have taken the time to remove any that are not high-waisted out of my wardrobe since I have found what works best for me.
On your next shopping trip, focus on just jeans. Grab a variety of sizes and cuts, and park yourself in a fitting room to try them all on. Take your time, don't rush, and be sure to do the sit and stand to get a real feel for each pair. You may find you're more of a boot cut or straight leg person. Who knows, but either way it's super helpful to have at least one pair of jeans that makes you feel confident.
2. Non-workout sneakers
When it comes to items of casual clothing you should keep in your wardrobe, sneakers are key. I'm not talking about exercise shoes for running or going to the gym (yes, those are important too). I'm talking about sneakers that you can wear to comfortably walk around, run errands, sightsee or anything else without looking like you're in activewear. Athleisure may be trendy, but it's always a good idea to have casual clothing that doesn't appear as if you're headed to the gym.
Try a pair of sneakers with a memory foam base or a slip pair that's easy to throw on because you won't have to deal with shoelaces. You'll never go wrong with a classic, crisp white pair of Chuck Taylors, but if you're more into color there are always plenty of options to choose from. They're also a great way to add a boost to a more casual look.
3. A cozy sweater or top
No matter the weather, a cozy sweater or top will go far in your casual clothing wardrobe. It doesn't get any more classic than a white T-shirt or a black long-sleeved top. The best styles are super soft and have a relaxed, lived-in fit. While a crew neck cut is a no-brainer, a V-neck style works perfectly as a canvas for layering necklaces.
Even in the dog days of summer sweaters can be your best friend. Keep a few lightweight sweaters that can transition from season to season. They are also perfect for managing the blasting air conditioner at work or for keeping the evening chills at bay when the temperature dips.
4. A neutral carryall bag
If there is one thing every person needs to have it's a carryall bag. A bag with a more structured shape and tons of pockets for maximum storage goes with work clothes, but it is also appropriate with casual clothing pieces. The neutral color easily transitions from summer to colder weather and back again.
Look for one with a top-carry handle in addition to a shoulder strap for maximum versatility. Cream, brown and black are all classic colors that continue to look timeless, season after season.
Part of having a balanced and versatile wardrobe is having clothing for any situation. These four items will ensure that you're prepared for any casual outing while still looking neat and put-together!
