(UPI) A Florida man said he used a pillowcase to capture an 8-foot python found lurking in his garage, but not before the snake bit him on the hand.

Joseph Liscinsky said he and his small dog went out into the garage about midnight late last week and he soon spotted the serpent slithering near the canine.

"I was startled. My heart went, 'Boom,'" Liscinsky told WPLG-TV.

He said it was the first time he's seen a large snake on his property.

"I've been here 22 years. I have seen gators, Nile monitors, geckos -- a lot of wildlife," he said.

Liscinsky called a neighbor, who brought him a broom and a pillowcase.

"I got this. Held its head down and picked it up, and then it did an automatic wrap around," Liscinsky said.

He said he managed to get the snake into the pillowcase, but not before the serpent got some licks in.

"As soon as I tried to throw its head down, he jumped back up and got my fingers," he told WSVN-TV.

"Three times; one, two, three," he said. He raked it pretty hard.

Liscinsky said he's happy he found the snake before it found his dog.

"That thing would've wrapped this dog up, broke its bones and ate him," Liscinsky said.

The snake was taken away by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers.
