How to Send Money to Inmate

Published in Business Articles

Did you know that the American criminal justice system holds more than 2.3 million people in a wide variety of institutions, like state prisons, Indian Country jails, and more? Is your loved one included in those figures?

If you would like to send money to an inmate, then you might be confused about the process. We have the guide below for you, so you can send money online to your loved one in prison without any hassle or fear.

Do You Have Your Loved One’s Inmate Number?

As you might imagine, each online money transfer company has different procedures they use to send money online. BUT, the one thing that you will definitely need when sending money to your loved one in prison is their prison number (or register number).

It’s an 8-digit number assigned to each prisoner by the United States Marshals service when they enter prison. This number stays the same no matter which prison they end up moving to. It helps the staff and the government keep track of the inmate and their things.

These eight-digit prison codes follow this format: XXXXX-0XX. The first five numbers are unique to each inmate. And the last three numbers indicate where they were arrested and entered into the federal correctional system.

Once You Have the Register Number, It’s Easy to Send Money Online

If you have your loved one’s 8-digital register number, you are good to go. You can go to any online money transfer service (and there are many apps to send money online) and register with them.

Once you are registered with them and have authorized them to take money from your bank account, you will enter the Receive Code for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (which is 7932 for Western Union). The inmate number (or register number) you have already received from your loved one will ensure your money goes to the right inmate.

You can also use the United States Postal Services (USPS) to send a money order to a federal inmate. You will use your loved one’s full name and their 8-digital register number. And you send the cash to the BOP’s (Bureau of Prisons) central processing location (not to their specific facility).

As you can see, once you have the inmate register number and have chosen one of the many apps to send money, you are good to go. The process is actually quite easy. Thankfully, it’s one less thing you have to worry about.

You Are Now Ready to Send Money to an Inmate

With the two pieces of information laid out above, you are ready to send money to an inmate. If you are worried about your loved one in prison and wish to make their life a bit easier, sending money to them is a great way to ensure that.
