Manchester United beats Liverpool 3-1 in Guinness Cup final

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- This was one of those rare occasions when two of England's elite club teams met outside of the Premier League.

So when one of oldest and storied English soccer rivals met for the first time outside their native homeland, a goal meant plenty.

When captain Wayne Rooney scored in the 55th minute his jubilant celebration was promptly followed with another by Juan Mata three minutes later as Manchester United rallied for a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup in front of 51,104 fans at Sun Life Stadium on Monday.

Counting all matches against each other, it was the first time Manchester United defeated Liverpool by at least two goals since Mar. 23, 2008.

Rooney's goal inside the far post, his third of the tournament, was the result of a nice delivery from Javier Hernandez. Rooney's shot was even sweeter as it came off the inside of his left heel, tying the score at 1-1.

Rooney would later be awarded the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Liverpool never had much of a chance to regroup as Mata scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from Luke Shaw.

Jessie Lingard finished the second half comeback for United, putting away their final goal in the 89th minute on an assist from Shinji Kagawa.

Manchester United did a better job in the second half of keeping their opponent on their heels, which in turn kept them from the good looks at goal that came during the first 45 minutes.

Liverpool had beaten United 3-0 in their last meeting that came in a Premier League match last March.

Liverpool drew first blood in this 120-year old rivalry after forward Raheem Sterling was tackled in the deep in box near the back line by United defender Phil Jones. The foul of that nature was the customary penalty kick.

Midfielder Steven Gerrard calmly converted the attempt past keeper David De Gea for the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
