Hunter Mahan breaks trophy after winning the Barclays

Hunter Mahan went more than two years between PGA Tour victories -- so it makes sense that he forgot how to handle a victory ceremony.

After winning the Barclays -- the first stop of the FedEx Cup playoffs -- this weekend, Mahan broke the winner's crystal chalice in two.

"The trophy? I don't know," he joked when reporters asked him about the incident. "I don't know what you're talking about."

The first few minutes after his victory at Ridgewood Country Club were a bit confusing for Mahan. First, his wife and daughter unexpectedly showed up at the 18th green. They had arrived in New Jersey to surprise him.

The problem was, they walked onto the green with Jason Day still playing back on the fairway. Day could have forced a playoff with a miraculous approach shot. Mahan quickly ushered his family off to the side.

"I'm like, wait a minute, should they be on the green or not, what do we do," Mahan said.

Minutes later, Mahan was posing for photographs when the trophy mishap occurred. One photo shows the chalice nearly toppling as his daughter gives it a shove. Then it came apart as he stood beside a wheelchair-bound fan.

The trophy reportedly can be repaired or replaced.
