McCutchen leaves Pirates game early with 'left rib discomfort'

Reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen left the Pirates-Cardinals game at PNC Park in the sixth inning Tuesday with "left rib discomfort."

The discomfort presumably occurred after slamming his back into the center-field wall to make a spectacular catch in the third inning that robbed Matt Carpenter of a hit.

McCutchen, according to the Pirates, was to be treated Tuesday night and re-evaluated on Wednesday.

He only returned from the disabled list Aug. 19 -- exactly one week ago Tuesday from a rib fracture, or more specifically, an avulsion fracture involving the costochondral cartilage of the 11th rib.

McCutchen has said repeatedly he has felt "good enough" to be back in the lineup, but has never said he feels 100 percent.
