12 die, 45 injured in Pakistan bombing
The blast happened at a checkpoint manned by pro-government paramilitary fighters near the city of Peshawar, the BBC said. In addition to those killed, who were mostly paramilitary members, 45 others were wounded, mainly civilians at a nearby market.
Witnesses said the bomb appeared to be hidden in a pick-up truck parked next to the market. Pictures broadcast on Pakistani television showed widespread destruction and three-foot-deep crater. People were trapped in the rubble of destroyed buildings, the BBC said.
While there had been no claim of responsibility for the bombing, Pakistan is engaged in an intense struggle with Taliban militants in the region.
The bombing came as Pakistan's provincial parliaments voted to elect strongly pro-Western Asif Ali Zardari president.
