Prisoner escapes from van before court

BALTIMORE (UPI) -- A judge said it is "outrageous" that a convicted drug dealer easily escaped from a van while being transported to Baltimore Circuit Court to face gun charges.

Officer Deborah Barron said she tried to drive prisoner Marcus Anderson, 22, to court Tuesday without handcuffs, in a prison van without security cages or extra locks.

Anderson, who is more than six feet tall and weighs 220 pounds, "leaped out" of the van when it came to a halt at a red light, Barron told the court.

Barron said she kept driving and had no cell phone or radio to report the escape, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Judge Charles G. Bernstein said Anderson's illegal firearms trial would continue, even though he was still missing.

"If I were a young enterprising criminal, I'd come to Baltimore to set up my practice. This is the place to be. This is the Promised Land," Bernstein said sarcastically.

Barron was being investigated Wednesday, the newspaper said.
