India and Portugal to sign treaty

NEW DELHI (UPI) -- India and Portugal are set to sign a bilateral extradition treaty when Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva visits India next week.

Portugal, however, still reportedly has some reservations about the treaty because India has the death penalty, The Hindustan Times reported Thursday.

Despite the death penalty issue, Portugal handed over to India gangster Abu Salem, who served some time in a Lisbon prison on passport fraud and other charges before the handover.
