White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Some time ago we covered the idea of the “if only” thoughts. Here, if only there weren’t a knight on c6, it would be mate for White with 1.Rd8. There are other mating possibilities there as well. Only one “if only” works!

Solution:

A game Denker-MacMurray, 1932, finished 1.Nc7+ Kf8 2.Rd8+ Nxd8 3.Qe8 mate. The other “if only” was this way. The original “if only” might have been tried with 1.Nc7+ Kf8 2.Qxc6 bxc6 3.Rd8 mate, but Black refutes this by 2…Qxg5+. You still have to consider what the other guy can do!
