This problem is a little more complicated than our last one, but has the same idea as that position. Note that the Black king has no escape squares. White has no immediate series of checks, so looks for a way to win material using the idea of a mating attack on the back rank. Hopefully, that will be enough of a hint!
Solution
:
1.Rc1 Qa4 (anything else just loses material another way—the important thing is that the rook has now captured the open c-file and can go all the way down to Black's back rank.)2.Qxe4 Qxe4 [We're using the shortest mate to make the point. Here's one example of prolonging the agony: 2...Qxa3 3.Rc7 Bg7 4.Ne7+ Rxe7 5.Rc8+ Re8 6.Rxe8+ Qf8 7.Rxf8+ Kxf8 (7...Bxf8 8.Qa8) 8.Qb4+ Ke8 9.Bxg7 Kd7 10.Qb7+ Kd6 11.Bf8+ Ke6 12.Qc6+ Kf5 13.Bg7 h6 14.Qc8+ Ke4 15.Qc4+ Kf3 16.Qd3#] 3.Ne7+ Rxe7 4.Rc8+ Re8 5.Rxe8#
