Black to Play and Mate

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Back in 1932, an amateur, a Professor Naegeli, had this position against the world champion, Alexander Alekhin. Black can force White to resign. However, the good professor played 1...Qg1 and later drew by perpetual check. Can you find the move that could have forced the champion's resignation?

Solution:

Black should have played 1...f5! White could then resign because he can't, except for silly moves, prevent Black playing 2...Qg3+ followed by 3...Rh5 mate. Once the rook isn't pinned, it's over.
