White to Play and Draw

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

White is in desperate straits in this position; however, there is a way to avoid a loss! Some people in chess consider it the last refuge of scoundrels, and it will be our theme for the week.

Solution:

1.h8=Q Rh2+ No choice. Else White would be winning! 2.Kg5 Rxh8 3.g7+ Kxg7 Again...no choice, because if Ke8, then gxh8=Q. 4.f6+ and now the part of this composition that is absolutely priceless. If the Black king goes 4...Kf8, the White king is stalemated! If the Black king goes 4...h2, then after 5.Kh5, the Black king is stalemated!! How about that! An extraordinary composition by Bogdassaryanz.
