Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Black is threatening mate in one and one of White’s rooks. How can White turn this around and quickly win? An ancient study by Stamma.

Solution:

1.Rh5 Rxh5 [1...Rg4 2.Ra6#; 1...Rg4 2.Ra6#; 1...Rb4 2.Ra6+ Rb6 3.Rxb6#; After 1...Rc4, there are several ways to mate, but this way is especially instructive: 2.Ra6+ Rc6 3.Rh6+ Kc5 4.Raxc6+ Kd5 5.Ra6 Ke5 6.Rh4 Kf5 7.Ra5+ Kg6 8.Ke7 Kg7 9.Rg5#] 2.Ra6+ Kc5 3.Ra5+ Kb4 4.Rxh5 and White will mate with king and rook vs. king
