Be careful! This is a mate in THREE!


Solution:

1.Re1 White is threatening 2.Re2 and 3.Rh2. Do you see why 1.Rb2 would not work as well? 1...Ra6 [1...Nc1 2.Bg2 To prevent the rook from covering the check on h1 by going to h2. 2...Ra8 3.Bxa8; 1...Ra7 2.Bb7; 1...f5 2.Bc6; 1...c4 2.Bd5; 1...b3 2.Be4; 1...e2 2.Bf3; 1...Nc3 2.Rxe3] 2.Bc6 To prevent the rook from covering on h6. 2...fxg5 3.Rh1 An ingenious construction by Kennard, who has the bishop go to each one of the seven squares on that diagonal in response to the threat of the Black rook coming across to prevent a mate in three.
