HOMER, Alaska (UPI) -- Her mother says it wasn't what she was fishing
for, but Tegan Humphrey, 6, won the Homer (Alaska) Jackpot Halibut
Derby with a 138.8-pound catch.
Since Tegan, of Palmer, Alaska, only weighs 40 pounds, her father,
Charles, helped get the fish out of the Pacific Ocean and onto the
charter boat Sunday, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Charter Capt.
Rob Hyslip ended up shooting the fish so they could bring in it.
But Tegan said she was fishing for a mermaid, her mother Courtney told
the paper. Paula Frisinger, derby coordinator for the Homer Chamber of
Commerce said her committee will think about adding a mermaid
category. The Homer Jackpot is Alaska's biggest fishing derby.
Although she was upset at first that Hyslip had to shoot the fish,
Tegan soon fell asleep on the way back to shore, her father said.
