Surviving Spring Allergies

Do you have trouble with allergies? You're not alone. Over 35 million Americans will be dealing with spring allergies this year, too. The best thing to do is to avoid pollen and other allergens -- but how can you do that and still enjoy the warm season? Try these tips to keep pollen out of your house and yard instead.

* Close your windows at night to prevent pollen and mold from making its way into the house.

* Worried that keeping the windows closed at night will make the house stuffy? Use the air conditioner and a dehumidifier to keep the air cool and dry. This will also keep the air clear of pollen.

* Keep your car windows rolled up while driving.

* Enjoy the nice weather, but try to avoid going outside on days when there's a high pollen count. Most weather reports will include a pollen count in the spring and summer.

* When you go out for the day or on vacation, consider going to the beach or other more pollen-free areas.

* If you must work outside, use a paper mask to block pollen and mold while raking or mowing.

* Use the dryer for your laundry. As nice as you think drying your clothes and sheets on the line may be, it allows pollen to collect on your laundry.

* Be sure to take any allergy medications as prescribed. If your symptoms get especially severe, see your doctor -- don't take larger or extra doses.

* Take a shower after spending extended periods of time outside, to clear pollen from your hair and body.
