Why do wine bottles have those bumps on the bottom?

The purpose of the indentation at the bottom of a wine bottle is to strengthen the structure of the bottle and to trap the sediments in the wine.

I think you were right the first time, Koctoc. They are doing that with the food we buy form retailers. Just notice the indentions on the bottom of glass and plastic jars and bottles. Also notice the difference in oz's. They cannot lie about the weight, but there are no regulations on the shape of the containers.
