When did St. Nick first hang out at Christmastime?

St. Nicholas was bishop of the Turkish town of Myra in the early fourth century. It was the Dutch who first made him into a Christmas gift-giver, and Dutch settlers brought him to America where his name eventually became the familiar Santa Claus.

St. Nick

Bad question and bad answer. St. Nicholas was eastern European Bishop and priest, but it wasn't the Dutch who made him a gift giver. He was made a saint by the Catholic church because he was a gift giver. He went around to the homes of poor families handing out home made toys for the children.
