How expensive is rust?

From bridges to rebar, rust is everywhere. According to a recent study, the annual cost of metallic corrosion in the U.S. is approximately $300 billion. The report, by the Specialty Steel Industry of North America, Washington, D.C., estimated that about one-third of that cost could be avoided through broader application of corrosion-resistant material and "best anti-corrosive practice" from design through maintenance.

You should mention that most steel will rust, but only at the surface and then the rusting will stop. However, this only is true in more rural areas away from smoggy cities and also away from seacoasts. Ocean air laden with salt and acids in the smog can corrode most types of steel.
