Who made St. Nick into a Christmas gift giver?

St. Nicholas was bishop of the Turkish town of Myra in the early fourth century. It was the Dutch who first made him into a Christmas gift-giver, and Dutch settlers brought him to America where his name eventually became the familiar Santa Claus.

Arcamax, you're again are not telling the whole story. St. Nicholas, himself was the original Christmas gift giver. When he was serving as a bishop he collected and/or bought toys to give to poor children where he lived. He traveled around to various villages, especially at Christmas time to honor God's gift to us, Jesus. Then Santa Claus was invented out of him as you said.
