In response to HQ, it is a matter of Islamic practice that the woman MUST where white for mourning. The only exception is if she is wearing a garment that is 100% wool, and therefore it will be whatever the color that wool originally was.

That being said, it is not unusual for women in Islamic countries to wear a black "abaya" (outer convering) over their white clothes (so they don't stick out). And those who are religiously ignorant will wear black...well, simply out of ignorance (a custom they picked up many times from Western TV).

As far as countries like Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, you need to keep in mind that they also have Christian populations who wear black for mourning.

According to the laws of Islam, the women who is mourning the death of her husband should not even leave her house for 4 months except for specific needs (grocery shopping, etc).

I hope this clarified some misconceptions.

i believe they also wear white in japan. if you ever do business with japanese, do not give business gifts that are white. that means the deal is dead.

I live in Arab Muslim countries and i can assure you teh mourning color is black. Muslim women will not wear full black though, they'll add a little white whether it be a headscare or something else
