What solution did the 19th century postmaster for the problem of increased mail volume at Christmas?

As early as 1822, the postmaster in Washington, D.C. was worried by the amount of extra mail at Christmas time. His preferred solution to the problem was to limit by law the number of cards a person could send. Even though commercial cards were not available at that time, people were already sending so many home-made cards that sixteen extra postmen had to be hired in the city.

proofreading

I believe it's part of the deliberate attempt to "dumb down" America. Several years ago, I saw a paper written by a college freshmen that was given an "A". When I started high school, that quality of work might have gotten a "C". I agree with Nylasor. It's as though nobody cares anymore. As further proof, the quality of the responses written here are almost too illegible to even comment.

Drivel Indeed

I just started reading the emails from ArcaMax. My first thought was how poorly written they were. I used to be a professional proofreader. No wonder I can't find work as a proofreader these days. Nobody seems to care WHAT gets published!

English?

"What solution did the 19th century postmaster for the problem of increased mail volume at Christmas?" This is not a complete sentence and has no meaning. Who writes this drivel? Why don't you employ a proof reader?
