What does salmonella have to do with salmon?

The word salmonella, referring to bacteria that enter a person's digestive tract in contaminated food and causing food poisoning, has nothing to do with fish. It was named after U.S. pathologist Daniel E. Salmon.

I read somewhere that salmon is full of salmonella and I could never eat it especially the tinned variety or tuna without getting bowel problems. The local fishmonger in the market said a lot of fish was contaminated with worms and fall out and my cat started to refuse mackerel and gave up on tinned pilchards. I am now a happy vegetarian.
