How to Deal With the Frustrations of Air Travel With a Bit of Humor

Lorraine Messina
There was a recent article in the newspaper about the behavior of people on airplanes. I am sure those of us that fly can identify with the frustrations of air travel. I thought it would be humorous to take a look at these issues from a customer service point of view.

For example, kids kicking the back of your seat. Do you really think expressing your feelings to the child in back of you is really going to change anything? If anything, the kids become more defiant and kick your seat more often, especially, when Mom or Dad takes a bathroom break. Why not take this approach, start talking to the child. A good ice breaker is: "These seats can use a little more leg room don't you think." "Is my seat inclined too close to your legs?"

Once you break the ice ask where the child is from, where are they going, favorite book to read on the plane, favorite airplane food, favorite movie to watch on the plane etc. The child will probable become so bored with the conversation that they will fall asleep. At the very least, they will stop kicking your seat while you have the conversation.

Delayed flights. Don't we just love this. People sometimes forget Mother Nature sometimes has a say in our travel plans. I have experienced travel delays myself and have seen people get so frustrated and angry about it. Why not take the opportunity to make some friends. While everyone waits in the airline terminal try starting a conversation preferably with another stranded passenger.

Questions like, where are you from, where are you going, these are all good ice breakers. Another approach is to treat the event as an adventure. Once my flight was diverted to New York City at night and I had the opportunity to experience the most breathtaking view of the city and the Brooklyn Bridge. Getting diverted turned into a real treat.

Lost luggage. This can upset the most seasoned traveler. Personally I ship my luggage to my destination. Maybe it costs more but at least it shows up when I arrive at my final destination. The final destination being the place I paid to arrive in not the "final frontier" which is at times what air travel can become.
