Nanoparticles come loose during washing

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (UPI) -- Swiss scientists say they have discovered silver nanoparticles being used in some brands of socks are being released into the environment during washing.

Bernd Nowack and colleagues at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research said their research is one of the first studies to focus on the release of silver nanoparticles during laundering of anti-odor, anti-bacterial socks. They said their findings might lead to ways that manufacturers and consumers can minimize the release of the particles into the environment, where they could harm fish and other wildlife.

The scientists said they studied the release of nanoparticles in laundry water from nine different textiles, including different brands of commercially available anti-odor socks.

The researchers found most of the released particles were relatively large and most came off the fabrics during the first wash. The total released varied from 1.3 to 35 percent of the total nanosilver in the fabric.

"These results have important implications for the risk assessment of silver textiles and also for environmental fate studies of nanosilver, because they show that under certain conditions relevant to washing, primarily coarse silver-containing particles are released," the scientists said.

The research is presented in the Nov. 1 issue of the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

'GERMS' are what lives inside you. Without them you would die.

Odd, that the "study", indicates that the silver particles are released, and such detail is provided, but it "assumes" that the particles may be harmful to fish.
How does the "assumption" do anything but gain headlines for their study, and impune the use of silver to help out our GI's overseas?
Were I to guess, I can more safely "assume". that the fish would benefit from the silver since it kills germs and virus.
