Shriners overcome parade size restrictions
The charitable fraternal group has participated in the city's parade for the past 13 years with men driving mini-cars and scooters, and walking clowns and walking clowns. Its parade entry was about 100 feet long, but this year the children's charity was told it had to scale back to one-third that size because of marshaling space concerns and also to keep the parade to under an hour in length, The (Halifax) Chronicle-Herald reported.
Ivy Ho, director of communications for the city's business commission, said public opposition was fast and furious.
"There were so many negative comments and we didn't want them overwhelming the spirit of the parade," she said. "It was getting a little out of hand."
Part of the Shriner parade paraphernalia is the Fez Unit, a giant fez mounted on a trailer that contains a chemical toilet for the more elderly Shriners to use during the march, the report said.
