Kenyan sect leader released from jail

NAIROBI, Kenya (UPI) -- Kenyan sect leader Maina Njenga has been released from jail after murder charges against him were dropped, officials said.

Head of public prosecution Keriako Tobiko said Njenga, leader of the Mungiki sect -- which police say is more akin to an organized crime gang -- was freed Friday for lack of evidence he was involved in the slayings of 29 people in the central Kenyan town of Karatina, the BBC reported.

The broadcaster said Njenga's release prompted hundreds of his followers to gather in a Nairobi church to welcome him back.

"I had a very good time (in jail) to study the Bible that is why now I will come to you like a professor of the Bible," he reportedly told the congregation. "All other people that believe I am their chairman must also follow my example. They should now come to the church and start receiving salvation."

The BBC said police accuse the Mungiki sect of extorting money from owners of minibus taxis and other public transport vehicles and of carrying out a series of grisly beheadings, to which authorities responded with a crackdown that killed more than 100 sect members.
