Christian left spurs political activism

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Progressive and liberal Christians are revving up political activism in the faith-based politicking long associated with the religious right, observers say.

Of immediate concern is a massive left-leaning ad blitz on Christian and country-music stations across 10 states urging support for congressional legislation to rein in greenhouse gas emissions. The ads picture the issue as an urgent matter of Biblical proportions, The Wall Street Journal says.

A religious coalition called the American Values Network spent nearly $200,000 for the global ads and plans another $150,000 in the coming months to rally church pew support among pastors and congregations in Nevada, Colorado and Arizona for climate change legislation.

Another left-based religious coalition planned scripture-quoting radio ads this weekend aimed at more affordable health insurance.

The religious right and secular conservatives meanwhile are taking notice and are promoting a campaign dismissing global-warming alarms as hype and potentially harmful to the economy in general and the poor in particular. That message also is circulating among the pews.

I take personal offense to the comment from "wrote" that I am not a born-again Christian simply because of my political views -- I have accepted Jesus into my heart as my personal Saviour and Lord, and I DON'T believe that my political beliefs conflict at all with my Christian beliefs -- as my Bible states, "Judge not, lest ye also be judged in the same manner . . " Better watch out, "wrote," God sees all and knows all . . . .

Christian Left

What we have seen of the religious right's campaign of the past 30-some years bears no resemblance to, and often contradicts, Christ's teachings. Compassion, charity, humility and peace are all essential Christian values. The strangest thing to come out of the religious right/neoconservative movement has been its utter contempt for the very concept of "namby-pamby" compassion. We can't overlook Christ's teachings about the poor and powerless. He pointed out that however we treat "the least of these," that is how we treat Him. And what has come out of the Christian right is some very harsh, cruel and ugly treatment!
