Rene Descartes has been called both the Founder of Modern Philosophy
and the Father of Modern Mathematics. Though he studied law early in
his life, he never actually practiced. He instead became interested
in seeing the world and finding "truth." His travels led him to
discover an interest in science and mathematics, and he devoted his
life to the practice and study of these. He died shortly after
becoming tutor to Queen Christina of Sweden - he was believed to have
contracted pneumonia, but other records say he may have been poisoned.
