Is Your Garage Broken?

Richard Cross
Garages are strange things, because although many of us take them for granted when they stop working we realise how much we usually use them! Garages don't break too often but when they do it can be a real nuisance to be without the door.

If you're garage door isn't working right, regardless of if it is hard to open or just makes lots noise, then there is probably a problem with one of the components of the garage. Luckily, in most cases fixing a single component will fix the door. However in some cases it may be a complicated or even dangerous job.

The main problem is that garage doors are very heavy pieces of metal which are worked by extremely high tension springs that are also made out of heavy material. Put like that, it's simple to see why they are considered dangerous and should only be fixed by someone who knows what they are doing.

A good example is if the springs snap they can shatter showering the garage in fast moving pieces of metal, or the door can just drop onto anyone who happens to be underneath it at the time. For that reason you should inspect your springs regularly even if your door seems to be functioning fine.

There are plenty of other parts of the garage such as the rollers and hinges, but unless you are 100% sure you know how to fix them yourself it is nearly always better to hire an expert to do it for you. He or she will be able to do the job correctly so that you don't have to worry about you or your families safety.

People are injured every year by garage doors that haven't been maintained properly so it is a definite problem and not one that you should ignore just for the sake of a few pounds. Regularly inspecting the parts of your garage door will go a long way to ensuring that you pick up on any problems as soon as they start to arise.
