Food Trivia Quiz

FoodReference.com
1) This fruit of this palm tree vies to be a rival of the coconut, but is restricted to the less humid regions of the tropics. As a source of food, it strongly resembles the coconut in various ways. The large black fruit (nuts) growing in clusters at the base of the leaves, contain a refreshing juice similar to coconut water. The soft white kernel of the young fruit is eaten fresh or may be cooked.
The sap of the tree is used to produce 'toddy' and 'jaggery.' The white flesh is increasingly being found canned, as fruit cocktail along with other tropical fruit. Name this palm tree and its fruit.

Answers

1) The Sea Apple from the Palmyra or sugar palm.
(From 'Tropical Fruit' by Desmond Tate)

2) The year is 1896.

3) The name of the drink and the name of the club is The Manhattan.

5) Dr. Anderson developed Puffed Rice in NYC in 1902, which was introduced to the world at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.

6) c) Granula NOT Granola. James C. Jackson, a follower of Sylvester Graham (who praised the virtues of whole grain flour, which was soon to be called Graham flour) developed what he called 'Granula' in 1863. Granula was Graham flour dough baked into dry loaves, broken into chunks and baked again, and then ground into still smaller chunks. This was the first ready-to-eat breakfast cereal. (C.W. Post used basically the same recipe for Post's Grape Nuts in 1898). By the way, 'Granola' (baked wheat, oats and corn nuggets) was developed in 1877 by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (before he formed the cereal company with his brother). He originally called his cereal 'Granula', but was sued by Jackson, and they compromised on the name 'Granola'.

7) The herb is Cheese Rennet (for its ability to curdle milk) and Lady's Bedstraw or Yellow Bedstraw related to its use as a mattress stuffing.
