Teen sues to wear Sikh jewelry

A Sikh girl is pursuing a discrimination suit against a school in Wales for not allowing her to attend classes wearing a religious bracelet.

Sarika Watkins-Singh, 14, was excluded from Aberdare Girls' School last November because she refused to abide by school rules that permit only wristwatches and ear studs, The Times of London reported Wednesday.

The case is before the High Court in London which is being asked to decide whether the school's action amounts to unlawful discrimination under Britain's religion, race and equality laws.

At Tuesday's hearing, the court was told the bracelet worn by Watkins-Singh was a symbol of her Sikh faith and not a piece of jewelry.

The justice hearing the case said the only issue of fact in the case seems to be whether the girl was actually obliged by her religion to wear the bracelet.

Watkins-Singh's lawyer argued that it wouldn't be right for a secular court to make such a determination, The Times said.

religion and jewelry

I am sorry, but I have to side with the school on this one. The school is not discriminatory of her Sikh religion. It has simply set forth a universal dress code to prevent just such a case of this. All religous symbols are not allowed. And I don't care if it is a symbol of her religion, it is still a piece of jewelry. I wear a cross, as a symbol of my Christianity, but it is
still a piece of jewelry. If she is suing for monetary damages then she going to give it to someone or she just suing for the right to wear her jewelry. She is all wrong here. She has no right to any money, and if she is allowed to wear her piece of jewelry, than everybody else will also have to be allowed to do so. But to do everything on an even keel, they must draw a line somewhere, they set an official standard of a watch and ear studs, period. There is nothing discriminatory about that!!

Sikh Bracelet

What is the matter with these people. This youn lady wanted to wear the braclet to keep her in touch with her belief and faith. No one has that right to tell her she can't wear it. I think it is a small price for the school to let her have it. I think that any one should be able to wear something of their countr's orgion. I say hey, I think she should sue on principle and then leave because people would probably make her life hell. Go for girl. I am a born again christian reformed from a jewish backround. I embrace both.

wearing bracelets in school

every little thing is in question these days, because we, humans, who were created in God's image and likeness, want to look otherwise, in character, faith, etc.because we are not of one mind, one heart and one spirit.WHY?because of pride, envy, greed, lust. sloth, gluttony, anger, the rest of the evil -SIN.That's SATAN's work.We pray evryday, the OUR FATHER, to help live the abundant life Jesus promised us.Let us be people who are God-fearing, so this world will be a world full of blessings, with well-behaved humans, which is the highest level of the animal kingdom.Bracelet does not identify us, it's our hearts that does.If our hearts are pure, then what we do or say is good. There is harmony and peace around the world. Students shopuld obey school rules. There are other schools around, if they are not happy.
