Ransome began his movement into the literary scene of London after
abandoning a college education. One of his first books, about Oscar
Wilde, involved him in a libel suit with Lord Alfred Douglas, which he
eventually won. After this, however, he left his wife and children to
travel to Russia. While there, he not only collected stories for
children's books, but also served as a spy for MI5. He became the
first winner of the Carnegie Medal in 1936, and his works have become
popular in many countries.
