Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra lived an adventurous early life, fighting
in wars and enduring hardships that appeared in some form in his later
literary work. After he settled permanently in Madrid, he began
writing his famous fiction and plays, among them "Don Quixote de la
Mancha," which is considered to be the first modern novel. His work
also includes a series of short stories, romances, and poetry. His
last novel, "Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda," was published a
year after his death.
