Ambrose Grinnett Bierce was originally a journalist in San Francisco,
but became known as a dark political satirist by his fans. However, a
poem he had written in 1900 seemed to foreshadow the assassination of
President McKinley, and he was accused of having been a part of the
conspiracy to kill him. He is best known for his tightly-written
stories and often disturbing realism, especially in his short stories
such as "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." He disappeared in
December 1913, and the details of his death are still unknown.
