(July 18, 1811 - Dec. 24, 1863)
William Thackeray was born in India, but sent to England at the age of
five for school. He quicky became skilled in parody, but his academic
performance declined when he went on to Trinity College. After a
turbulent time in marriage and financial stability, he began working
as a humorist and columnist for the magazine "Punch." Early in his
career, he wrote under many ridiculous pseudonyms (such as George
Savage Fitz-Boodle). However, he gained a great deal of respect under
his own name, to the point that his funeral was attended by several
thousand people.
