Joseph Smith

Joseph Smith, Jr. was born into a family of farm workers, but spent a great deal of his youth reflecting on religion and spirituality. At the age of seventeen, he claimed to have a vision of an angel directing him to four gold plates, upon which were written an account of the religious experiences of the Native Americans in the 400s A.D. When he was finally allowed to receive the plates four years later, he transcribed over one hundred pages of manuscript. Smith and his brother were killed when an angry mob stormed the prison where they were being held on several diverse charges.
