William Sydney Porter was born in North Carolina, and began a long
series of different jobs late in his youth. Shortly after his wife
died, he was found guilty of embezzlement and sent to prison in 1898.
While there, he wrote a series of short stories to support his
daughter, using the name "O. Henry" so that his readers would not know
he was in prison. He continued to use the pen name after his release
three years later, and continued to write for magazines up to and
until his death in 1910.
