Daniel Foe added the "De" to his last name in an attempt to sound more
aristocratic. He was sent to prison for what were considered
inappropriate political activities, but was released in exchange for
being an intelligence agent for the Earl of Oxford. Besides his
famous "Robinson Crusoe," which may have been based partly on a true
story, he also wrote the novel "Moll Flanders" and an account of the
Black Plague. The exact date of his death is uncertain.
