Washington Irving

Washington Irving not only wrote his famous short stories based on German and Dutch folklore, but was also an accomplished biographer - his subjects included George Washington and Muhammad. He traveled to Europe, where he spent much of his time on the continent gathering ideas for what would become his most famous stories. However, to prove that he had not "become European," he wrote three books about western America.
