Was Jesus Really Dead When He Was Placed In the Tomb?

By Billy Graham, Tribune Media Services
Q: Was Jesus really dead when they placed Him in the tomb? I can accept most of what Christianity teaches, but to be honest the idea that someone came back from the dead is a bit hard for me to swallow. Maybe Jesus wasn't really dead, and He just recovered once His body was taken down from the cross. -- P.L.

A: The hardened Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus and then took His body down from the cross and placed it in a stone tomb were very familiar with death -- and they had no doubt Jesus was truly dead. Nor did anyone else on that tragic day.

Later, after the resurrection, the authorities bribed the soldiers to say that Jesus' disciples had stolen His body (see Matthew 28:11-15). It didn't even occur to them, however, to claim instead that He hadn't really died, but had somehow recovered enough strength to move the huge stone blocking the tomb's entrance and then overcome the armed guards posted outside. They knew no one would believe it -- nor should we.

If Jesus were only another human being, then we'd have reason to doubt His resurrection. But the Bible says that He was more than a man: He was God in human flesh, sent from Heaven according to the plan of God to save us from our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and by His resurrection Jesus Christ conquered our greatest enemies: sin, and Satan, and death, and Hell.

Don't limit God, and don't turn away from what Jesus Christ did for you by His death and resurrection. God loves you, and because of Christ's resurrection we have hope. His words are true: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies" (John 11:25).

The Bible has many witnesses who said he did. You find a list of those witnesses in 1 Corinthians 15:4-8: Cephas [Peter], the 12 [apostles], more than 500 at once, James [Jesus' brother] and Paul himself. There are many more accounts of Jesus' resurrection in the pages of the Gospels, and witness of the power of the disciples who believed in Jesus' resurrection. If Jesus was still dead, why didn't the Jewish authorities produce the body of Jesus to stop all the resurrection talk. And the authorities did try to stop the resurrection talk to no avail.

I recommend you find a book by Frank Morrison, "WHO MOVED THE STONE". Morrison had been an atheist, who wanted to put the talk of Jesus' resurrection to rest. But as he researched the book he found that there WAS good solid evidence for Jesus' resurrection.

May God bless you as you examine this subject.

Jesus was God's messenger, to be sure. But if you read the Bible you would see Jesus claimed to be able to rise from the dead. Read the Gospel according to John chapter 10: verses 14-18. A similar but more obscure reference to what Jesus said about raising himself up is found in John 2:18-22.

And the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus knew he was dead before they took him from the cross. Please read John 19:31-37 but pay special attention to verses 33 & 34: "But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water." The water separating out from the blood shows that Jesus had been dead for quite some time!

But the question is did Jesus rise from the dead as he claimed he would [see also Mark 9:31]? You say no, Amin, but would God's messenger lie? And if he lied would he truly be God's messenger?

Wrong

According to the Bible, THE WORD OF GOD, Jesus was God made man, HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. Jesus was NOT a prophet; he was a FULFILLMENT of prophesy. The Quran is wrong on this.

Jesus

According to the Quran, Jesus was the messanger of God just like other prophets before him and others after him. He was bestowed with many Holy Powers. He was very honest, dedictaed and devoted in his mission. God is one; He is abolsutely independant, He is neither beget nor begotton and there is none like unto HIM. If they did crucify him which is very likely, he could not have walked alive from the Tomb. The body is dead but the soul is eternal. Thsi is my understanding.
